How I Work

Let’s clear some things up…

If you’re worried about spending the rest of your life on a therapist’s couch, you’ll be glad to know I don’t even have one.

Popular culture depicts therapy as a life-long thing that involves a lot of Freud, but that’s not what we do here. For most people, therapy is a temporary, fairly short-term thing.

As you reduce your suffering and improve your mental health in therapy, you’ll probably need less of it. Many people resolve the issues that brought them into therapy and are done.

Others prefer to schedule regular mental health maintenance and check in when they need to. I work both ways.

And about that Freud thing…

Therapy has developed significantly since the 1890s, and the theory and practice have changed a lot.

So, don’t expect much dream analysis or blaming everything on your imaginary Oedipus Complex.

Instead, we’ll talk and explore the issues that you’re concerned about and use different therapeutic approaches to address them.

I view people holistically.

Your emotional being is not separate from your physical, mental, and spiritual being, and changes in any area can influence the others.

I consider the whole person, so we’ll talk about ways to help in each area.

If you want to get nerdy about it…

I use an eclectic approach that is grounded in Humanistic/Person Centered Therapy, while pulling ideas and strategies from other theories including Existential Therapy, Wellness Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.

I’m always learning about new techniques and approaches to help my clients.

So, when you come into my office, you’ll sit in a comfy chair, conveniently located next to the tissue box.

You’ll talk about what’s bothering you, I’ll ask some questions, we’ll make some discoveries, and create new plans. In between sessions, you may have techniques to experiment with or things to think about.

We’ll schedule as many sessions as it takes to address your issues, and once you’re feeling better and back on track, you can take your new tools and set off on your own.

Let’s get started

I get where you’re coming from and value your uniqueness. Your path to healing won’t be the same as anyone else’s, but I’ll help you find what works for you, so you can start feeling better.
